SJ Okemow is a multidisciplinary artist of Nehiyaw and Eastern European descent. She has ties to Bigstone Cree Nation on Treaty 8 and grew up in Calgary, Treaty 7. She holds a BSc in Physiology and an MSc in Medical Art. She currently teaches Advanced Animation at OCAD University and is a PhD candidate at the University of New South Wales, in the 3D Visual Aesthetics Lab. She is a Board Certified Medical Illustrator and a member of the Association of Medical Illustrators (AMI) And the Institute of Medical Illustrators (IMI). It is through her art practice that she tries to parse together thoughts about her Nehiyaw identity, her relation to land, place, nationhood, and her experiences as a science student and as a professional medical artist.
